SAVE GANGA MOVEMENT
BHAGIRATHI BACHO SANKALP
A GANDHIAN MOVEMENT FOR A NON-VIOLENT CULTURE OF DEVELOPMENT
It is deeply shocking and painful to see that our National Mass Media, political leaders and intellectuals are again totally ignoring “the Fasting Unto Death for Conservation of Bhagirathi” of Prof G.D. Agrawal from Makar Sankranti, 14th January 2009 near Birla House, Delhi, like to his earlier June 2008 Fasting Unto Death for the same cause. Disrupting the continuity, quantity, quality and regime of flows of the Ganga and the invaluable ecology of the Himalayas, the government of India has been proposing and/or promoting a number of hydro-electric projects on various rivers of the earth quake prone Ganga valley in Uttarakhand. Dr. G.D. Agrawal, a formerly professor and Head, Civil (and Environmental) Engineering Dept. IIT, Kanpur and Member Secretary, Central Pollution Control Board, is again Fasting Unto Death against the above anti-nature and anti-environmental policy of the Government and the noted environmentalist and supreme court advocate Shri M.C. Mehta is the Convener of the Bhagirathi Bachao Sankalp. It is highly immoral for the Mass Media, political leaders and intellectuals to totally ignore such an event of great national significance. It is highly unfortunate that both the environmentalists who never tire of talking of the fragility and uniqueness of the Himalayan environment and the spiritual leaders who swear in the name of Gangaji are also showing utter apathy to the highly anti- GANGAJAL and anti-Himalaya activities of the Government. We must not ignore his scientific claims about the importance of the ecology of the Himalayas and the Ganga and about the bactericidal, disease curing, health promoting, non-putrefying and purifying properties of GANGAJAL.
I am attaching herewith a Save Ganga & Save Himalayas Appeal to the Hon’ble Prime Minister. The Appeal is to be sent to the Hon’ble Prime Minister after getting signatures for it from various like-minded persons. We earnestly request you to give your moral support to the Bhagirathi Bachao Movement and do whatever you can for its success and to save the life of Prof Agrawal.
With warm regards,
Mrs Rama Rauta

AN APPEAL TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA TO SAVE THE GANGA AND THE HIMALYAS

Subject:Conservation of the Bhagirathi River by Stopping Work on Lohari NagpalaDam Construction by NTPC.
It is greatly agonizing, anguishing and alarming to see that year after year we are doing more and more harm to the invaluable natural forests and wildlife of the Himalayas, and in spite of our launching the Ganga Action Plan in 1985 and spending hundreds of crores of rupees for this purpose, the pollution levels of the mighty Ganga continues to be alarmingly high, even though we know it to be the lifeline of crores of our people and crores of our people consider her to be their divine mother. It is deeply painful to know that disrupting the continuity, quantity, quality and regime of flows of the Ganga, the Government of India has been proposing and/or promoting a number of hydro-electric projects on various rivers of the earth quake prone Ganga valley in Uttarakhand including the Bhagirathi to tap their hydro-power potential. In addition to the already built Tehri Dam and Maneri Bhali-2 Dam, a series of dams are planned or being built between Gangotri and Uttarakashi on the river Bhagirathi. The river is being diverted through tunnels for many killometers impendng the free flow of the river. Around 40 Km down the Glacier, the forest is being destoryed to make another of several dams turning the Ganga a dry river for long periods near Uttarkashi, the Holy city of temples. Its entire fauna has dried out or eaten up. Contractors and local looters are plundering its stones and sand. In near future this may become the fate of the entire river and GANGAJAL may loose all its bactericidal, disease curing, health promoting, non-putrefying and purifying properties.
Is not crippling the holy river by constructing dams in the earth quake prone Uttarkhand region far great a sacrifice for the production of few hundred or thousands megawatt of electricity? Is not it highly immoral to cause great harm to the ecology of the Himalayas and the Ganga and the bactericidal, disease curing, health promoting, non-putrefying and purifying properties of GANGAJAL to satisfy our desires for luxuries?
Dr.G.D. Agarwal has been again on a “fast-unto –death” from Makar Sankranti, January 14, 2009 at Delhi against the above anti-nature and anti-environmental policy of the Government and the noted environmentalist and supreme court lawyer Shri M.C. Mehta is the Convener of the Bhagirathi Bachao Sankalp.
We strongly believe that at least the Uttarkhand region of the Ganga should be spared of any works that disturb its natural flow-regime, ecology, purity or piety. Dr.G.D. Agarwal firmly belives that at least 125 kms bhagagirthi upstrem of uttarkashi must be spared of any such activities. We earnestly request you to take immediately the necessary steps in this direction and save the life of Professor G.D. Agarwal.
Protection of the Ganga, symbolizing all rivers and water bodies, and the Giriraj Himalaya, symbolizing all mountains, forests and wildlife, must be accorded highest priority in our national development process. Ultimately, we must create a new paradigm of development for India based on Gandhian principles of Truth and universal non-violence.
